Number 251

Number 251 is a prototype classical mandolin, an attempt at duplicating the flat-top sound of the best classical instruments, with a crisp, fast attack, but with improved structural integrity from features like modern two-way truss rod, zero fret, adjustable and removable neck joint allowing you to adjust the string height, side port, etc. It has a thread-through bridge assembly which exerts almost no down-pressure, allowing an ultra light lattice-braced flat top for quick response. The shorter scale, 13.2", is similar to the classical standard. A deep three-piece body emulates the bowl-back sound, and elevated arm rest and pick guard keep you from touching the sound board and reducing its vibration. Materials include curly maple body, European spruce top, flat fret board, ebony and rosewood trim, and Rubner tuners. I believe it is very successful and similar to classical instruments, bright with a little more sustain. Definitely not a bluegrass sound with prominent mid-range.
