Number 59
This is a mandocello in American walnut and bearclaw Sitka spruce.
Scale length is about 25 inches. The finish is low-luster rubbed varnish.
The arched top has an unequal X-brace, and the back is unbraced.
The bolt-on adjustable neck has a modern 2-way truss rod.
The bridge is massive and has height adjustment wheels.
The bindings are curly boxwood. The fingerboard has beautiful
inlays of white and Tahitian black pearl.
The head plate is light ebony and the pick guard and tail piece
are walnut. The black/white purfling line and silver hardware,
together with the matte finish, contribute to a subtly refined look.
The sound is big, fat, and rich with a lot more overtones than
is usual for this instrument. It would really shine in a mandolin
orchestra, or playing low parts in a band.
