Number 53
This is an archtop flat-back mandola with Leopardwood body and
Engelman spruce top. Scale length is 420mm (around 17"), strung with
Thomastik light octave Mandola strings because Thomastik alto
mandola strings are too short.
Construction features include the usual user-friendly bolt-on neck.
The top has hand tuned tone-bar bracing.
The neck has a modern 2-way adjustable truss rod, and the bridge
is adjustable. Gold Grover 18:1 micro-tuners provide easy tuning.
Decoration is kept simple to highlight the fantastic grain
of the Leopardwood (the heaviest of several species known
as Lacewood). The headstock, fingerboard and binding are ebony.
The curly headstock shape echoes the body points. Inlays are
subtle red Abalone diamonds. Finish is gloss water-based lacquer.
The sound of the arched top together with the flat back is very
rich and sonorous.
Excellent for classical Mandolin orchestra, Celtic or even bluegrass.
