Number 89
This is a bouzouki I made on commission for Roger Landes.
He specified a deep-dish three panel back, and I came up
with this. He also specified the slot head tuners.
The lower pair only is tuned in octaves, although
Roger could change this. The bracing is lighter than
normal, and the string break angle is low (6 degrees)
to avoid putting excess pressure on the bridge.
The body is black walnut with a western red cedar top.
The binding (around the top only) is curly maple, and
the head veneers are feather crotch walnut. Herringbone
trim completes the look.
The sound is rich, thick and complex, the way Roger envisioned
it I think (though these things are very hard to put into
words)! How much of this is because of the deep back
is anyone's guess!
